Carl West: Percussive Drawings This series of near-monochrome abstracts utilizes movement and æsthetic consideration derived from european & asian martial arts calligraphy and smithing. The drawings were executed with natural charcoal made by the artist. The use of this medium allows him to push beyond the limits of conventional charcoal to develop an unusual warmth, size and spontaneity of stroke.
